Mount this one is the farthest location, on the Antarctic continent that is uninhabited. Vinson Massif (4897 masl) is located in the Ellsworth Mountains. Vinson Massif was found in 1957 by a United States Air Force Pilot. Vinson Massif is named by the Carl Vinson (which is also the name of an aircraft carrier), a Georgia congressman who is the main supporter of funding for Antarctic research. Was first climbed in December 1966 by a joint group of the American Alpine Club and the National Science Foundation.
The continent of Antarctica or the South Pole have periods of darkness for 6 months in the winter and periods of light for 6 months in the summer. So of course when climbing is best when the summer, which is in November through January. Climbing can be done through the west side or east side of the Vinson Massif.
